And according to the legend, he tricked the devil more than once into promising not to claim his soul when he died.It goes like this: The penny-pinching Jack went drinking with the devil but didn't want to pay for the drinks, so he convinced the devil to turn into a coin.Instead of paying for the drinks, Jack pocketed the coin and kept it next to a cross, trapping the devil inside. The pumpkin would soon become the new canvas for carving jack-o’-lanterns.įor many of the early Irish immigrants coming to America, according to Stack, maintaining traditions like Halloween and carving jack-o’-lanterns was a way to stay connected to their loved ones back home in Ireland.Jack-o'-lanterns are a ubiquitous part of Halloween, but have you ever wondered where the tradition comes from? The legend supposedly begins in Ireland with a cheapskate named 'Stingy Jack.'As his name suggests, Jack was greedy but he was also clever. As Irish immigrants came to the United States to escape famine in the 19th century, they became introduced to a round, orange gourd native to the Americas: the pumpkin. Unbeknownst to the original creators of the jack-o’-lantern, their tradition of carving frightening faces into turnips would also evolve. Samhain morphed into Halloween, and the myth of Stingy Jack and the use of jack-o’-lanterns to scare off his evil spirit arose. Unbeknownst to the ancient Celts, their fall tradition of Samhain and of keeping evil spirits at bay would evolve throughout the centuries. (Sepia Times/Universal Images Group / Getty Images) Night of the living deadĪ child stands next to a jack-o'-lantern holding the American flag. With crudely-cut eyes and mouths, their faces seemed fully capable of truly frightening both the living and the dead. The turnips, donning their frightful faces, were then displayed near windows and doors in hopes of scaring away the soul of Stingy Jack or other evil spirits that might be wandering around, said Stack.īut unlike the spooky-yet-cute jack-o’-lanterns we’re familiar with today, the earliest jack-o’-lanterns appeared quite macabre. Despite being small, hairy and coarsely shaped, the turnips in Ireland still served as a useful medium for these early jack-o’-lanterns. Like Jack’s lantern, many of these inspired creations were made by carving faces into turnips. This is a model of a Hallowe’en ‘ghost turnip’ taken into the Collection in 1943 from Fintown in Co Donegal.Īccording to Stack, people in Ireland began to create their own jack-o’-lanterns as far back as around the 17th century. Scary lanterns were made using potatoes and turnips. So when Jack was dying for the third time, the devil refused to take his soul, and since Jack led a life of misery and cruelty, God wouldn’t take him either. Both times, Jack was dying, and when the devil came for his soul, Jack tricked him into giving him several more years of life. He then turned his sights to a much more prominent target – the devil. ![]() "There were different versions, but basically they all agree that he was grumpy, possibly less than wholesome in his appetites and he was mean, stingy, but also kind of mischievous."Īccording to Stack, Stingy Jack played tricks on his neighbors, family and friends. "The story is based on the story of a man called ‘Stingy Jack’ (pronounced "stin-jee jak")," said Elizabeth Stack, the Executive Director of the Irish American Heritage Museum in Albany, New York. While those words could be used to affectionately describe a few of our own family and friends, Irish legend has it they can also aptly describe the namesake of the jack-o’-lantern. ![]() Close-up of a jack-o'-lantern carved for Halloween night. ![]() ![]() Our Homeowners enjoy their cabin in the Great Smoky Mountains and deeply appreciate you respecting their wishes. They lull their victims into a false sense of security with jargon and steal your personal info. So, how do they do it? They pose as IRS officers soliciting for donations. They use all kinds of tactics to redirect the cash from the victims to their own pockets. They create a whole facade with a dummy website and hotline number. Others use the situation to their advantage and pose as fake charities. While it’s heart-warming to see people step-up during times of crisis, not everyone is so caring. This park was the first protected area in the country after the creation of the Lope-Okanda Wildlife Reserve in 1946. Lope National Park, which is mainly rainforest, is located in Gabon and is the best place to see mandrills. They travel three miles per day feasting on fruit trees, seeds and insects. Often times, it’s rare to see mandrills in the wild. The female population of mandrills outweighs the male population, but the male can be five times larger than the female. Typically there are four to five hundred mandrills in their group, making them one of the largest groups of animals. Mandrills have an omnivorous diet consisting mostly of fruits and insects.Their mating season takes place from June to October. Mandrills mostly live in tropical rainforests and forest-savanna mosaics. It is found in southern Cameroon, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, and Congo. The mandrill (Mandrillus sphinx) is a primate of the Old World monkey family, closely related to the baboons and even more closely to the drill. To be exact, the centre nurtures fourteen species of primates from gorillas and monkeys to reptiles and birds. The project collaborates with state and national governments, communities and other international and local NGOs in order to protect habitat and endangered species.Ĭameroon is the ideal location for the wildlife centre because it has one of the most diverse ranges of any plant and animal species of any country in the world. The Limbe Wildlife Center is a wildlife rescue and rehabilitation center. Due to this harsh reality, the health of these animals is crucial. Hunters get approximately $1000 per drill when they sell them to different restaurants. According to British vet and former head of the Limbe Wildlife Center, Felix Lancaster, there are only 3,000 drills remaining. Female drills lack the pink chin.įurthermore, drills are the most endangered species of the African primates due to the fact that they are hunted to serve on the dinner table. Mature males have a pink lower lip and white chin on a dark grey to black face with raised grooves on the nose. It has high sexual dimorphism in weight, with males weighing up to 50 kg (110 lb) and females up to 12.5 kg (27.5 lb). ![]() The drill is a short-tailed monkey up to 70 cm (28 in) long, similar in appearance to the mandrill, but lacks the bright blue and red on the face of the mandrill. The Drill (Mandrillus leucophaeus) is a primate of the family Cercopithecidae (Old World monkeys), closely related to baboons and most closely related to mandrills. Marmosets are often very territorial, though this is not the case among Roosmalens’ dwarf marmoset, where it is common for multiple females in a group to have young, instead of one dominant female. It is considered unusual among marmosets in that it gives birth to only a single baby instead of twins, the norm for marmosets. The dwarf marmoset has the smallest distribution of any primate in Amazonia. They live in large groups up to thirty and it is the second smallest monkey. It is a small (four inches from head to tail) New World monkey native to the Amazon Rainforest, on the east bank of the lower Madeira River, and the west bank of the Aripuanã River, in Brazil. The dwarf marmoset is known to exist in Nova Olinda. Roosmalens’ dwarf marmoset, also known as the black-crowned dwarf marmoset, was discovered in the Amazon in the 1990s. Until shortly after humans arrived on the island around 2,000 years ago, there were lemurs as large as a male gorilla. Lemurs have evolved to cope with an extremely seasonal environment and their adaptations give them a level of diversity that rivals that of all other primate groups. One of the most rare species that exists today is the Golden Bamboo Lemur, a shy animal, which feasts on a diet solely of bamboo and is under increasing threat. Over sixty different species are recognized today. The lemur evolved separately from other primates over 50 million years ago, when Madagascar separated from the African continent. The lemur exists only on the island of Madagascar and many are protected in Ranomafana National Park. While a large majority of primates exist within three continents: South America, Africa and Asia, others only remain in smaller areas or one specific country. ![]() These harmful activities include the cutting down of the rainforest, the bush meat trade as well as the pet trade. This is largely due to the activities of the nearly seven billion humans inhabiting the earth. The primate family, most closely related to humans, is in danger of becoming extinct. |
